Mini-split line set insulation

About this insulation

Mini split line set insulation does one critical job: it keeps the cold suction line from sweating and from soaking up heat before the refrigerant gets back to the compressor. This sleeve is the standard replacement — closed-cell elastomeric foam with a 3/8″ wall, sold in 6 ft sections, in ID sizes to fit 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, and 3/4″ OD copper. The self-seal split style is pre-slit along its length with adhesive edges, so it wraps over copper that's already connected — no need to disconnect lines and slide a closed tube on from the end. For runs exposed to sun, choose the UV-rated jacket option; bare foam degrades outdoors.

When to replace line set insulation

• Crumbling or cracked foam — sun-baked insulation flakes off, leaving bare copper. Common on older installs without a line set cover.
• Condensation drips — water stains on siding, in the wall cavity, or on the ceiling below a line run usually mean the suction line is sweating through gaps in the foam.
• Energy loss — bare or waterlogged sections let the suction line warm up on the way back to the condenser, cutting capacity and efficiency.

Which lines to insulate

The suction line — the larger, cold one — must always be insulated, on every system. Most mini-split manufacturers also call for insulating the smaller liquid line, since it can run cold in heat mode on a heat pump; follow your installation manual. Seal every joint between sections with the adhesive edges or foam tape so no copper shows: a single bare inch will sweat.

Installation notes

Measure your run, count out 6 ft sections, and pick the ID that matches your suction line OD — 1/2″ for most 9k–18k systems, 5/8″ for most 24k–36k. Wrap, press the self-seal edges together, and tape the seams.
