Mini-split disconnect boxes & electrical whips

Every mini-split condenser needs two electrical parts to pass inspection: a disconnect box mounted within sight of the unit, and a weatherproof whip carrying power from that disconnect into the condenser. We sell both — a 60A non-fused disconnect that covers every residential system, and a pre-made 1/2″ × 6 ft liquid-tight whip with the fittings already installed.

What the condenser's power run looks like

Power leaves your breaker panel on a dedicated circuit, lands at the disconnect box beside the condenser, then runs through a short flexible whip into the unit's wiring compartment. The disconnect is required by the National Electrical Code so the system can be de-energized at the unit before service; the whip exists because the last few feet need to be flexible, weatherproof, and vibration-tolerant — rigid conduit into a humming condenser is asking for cracked fittings.

Why non-fused?

Mini-split condensers get their overcurrent protection from the breaker in the panel, sized to the nameplate's minimum circuit ampacity (MCA) and maximum overcurrent protection (MOCP). That makes a fused disconnect redundant for a typical residential install — the non-fused pull-out style is cheaper, simpler, and what most installs (and most manufacturer manuals) call for. A 60A disconnect isn't "too big" for a 15A circuit; its rating just needs to meet or exceed the circuit's.

Sizing the wire

Conductor size comes from the condenser's nameplate, not the disconnect or whip: a 9k–12k single zone typically runs a 15–20A circuit on 14–12 AWG, 18k–24k units commonly need 20–30A on 12–10 AWG, and larger multi-zone systems go up from there. The 1/2″ whip has room for any of these plus ground. If any of this is unfamiliar, have a licensed electrician make the final connections — the mechanical install is DIY-friendly, the line voltage work is where pros earn their fee.

Finish the install

The disconnect and whip complete the outside wall alongside your line set and drain. Run everything together under a line set cover for a clean finish, and put the condenser on a wall bracket or ground stand so it stays level and clear of snow and splash.

Common questions

Does a mini-split need a disconnect box?

Yes. The National Electrical Code requires a service disconnect within sight of the condenser so power can be shut off at the unit before anyone works on it. Inspectors look for it on every install, DIY or professional.

Fused or non-fused disconnect for a mini-split?

Non-fused, for almost every residential install. The breaker in your panel provides the overcurrent protection, sized to the condenser's nameplate. The disconnect only needs to switch the circuit — a fused model adds cost and a second set of fuses to maintain without adding protection the panel isn't already providing.

What size electrical whip does a mini-split need?

A 1/2″ whip handles the conductors for virtually all residential mini-splits (14–10 AWG plus ground). Six feet gives enough slack to route from the disconnect into the condenser's wiring compartment with a drip loop. Pull conductor sizes per the unit's nameplate MCA.

Can I install the disconnect and whip myself?

Mounting the box and whip is straightforward DIY. The line-voltage connections — landing conductors in the panel, disconnect, and condenser — should be done or checked by a licensed electrician, and some jurisdictions require a permit for the circuit. Check local requirements before you start.
