MRCOOL line set sizes

The right line set diameter and length for every MRCOOL DIY mini-split — plus how MRCOOL's pre-charged Quick Connect line sets work and why 4th Gen and 5th Gen are not interchangeable. Prefer to go by run length too? Use the size calculator.

MRCOOL DIY line set size by capacity

Line set diameter is set by your system's capacity. Match your MRCOOL DIY unit's BTU rating to the pair below.

MRCOOL DIY unitLine set (liquid × suction)
9,000 BTU1/4" × 1/2"
12,000 BTU1/4" × 1/2"
18,000 BTU1/4" × 1/2"
24,000 BTU3/8" × 5/8"
36,000 BTU3/8" × 5/8"

MRCOOL's own pre-charged DIY line sets use 1/4" × 1/2" for the 9k–18k units (its 4th-Gen line sets carry SKUs like DIY16-1412, where "1412" means 1/4" + 1/2") and 3/8" × 5/8" for 24k and 36k units. Across the broader mini-split market some 9k/12k systems use 1/4" × 3/8", but MRCOOL DIY systems ship and replace with the 1/4" × 1/2" pre-charged set. This is general guidance — always confirm the exact line sizes against your unit's installation manual.

⚠ 4th Gen (R-410A) and 5th Gen (R-454B) are not interchangeable

MRCOOL's 4th Generation DIY systems use R-410A refrigerant. The newer 5th Generation DIY systems use R-454B (the lower-GWP refrigerant replacing R-410A). MRCOOL states the two are not compatible — an R-410A line set will not work on an R-454B system. Buy the pre-charged line set that matches your system's generation and refrigerant, not just its diameter and length.

About MRCOOL's pre-charged "Quick Connect" line sets

MRCOOL DIY systems are the rare mini-splits a homeowner can install without a vacuum pump or EPA certification, because the line sets are pre-flared and pre-charged ("Quick Connect" / "No-Vac"). You hand-tighten then torque the couplings and open the service valves — no evacuation step on the line-set connection.

  • Fixed lengths. Pre-charged sets come in 16, 25, 35, and 50 ft (a 75 ft set/configuration is available for longer runs).
  • Maximum line length. The system is pre-charged for a maximum total run — about 75 ft (for example a 50 ft line plus a 25 ft extension). Going beyond the pre-charged maximum may require an HVAC pro to add refrigerant.
  • Match the refrigerant. Use a 4th Gen (R-410A) set for a 4th Gen system and a 5th Gen (R-454B) set for a 5th Gen system.

How to find your MRCOOL model's line set size

Two quick ways to confirm the size for your exact unit:

  • Read the capacity from the model number. MRCOOL DIY model numbers include the BTU — e.g. a model containing "12" is 12,000 BTU (1/4" × 1/2"), a "24" is 24,000 BTU (3/8" × 5/8"). Then match the table above.
  • Check the spec sheet / installation manual. The manual lists the exact liquid and suction line sizes, the included line set length, the maximum line length, and the refrigerant — it's the final word.

Common questions

What size line set does a MRCOOL DIY 12,000 BTU use?

A MRCOOL DIY 12,000 BTU uses a 1/4" liquid line and a 1/2" suction line (1/4" × 1/2"), supplied as a pre-charged Quick Connect line set. The same 1/4" × 1/2" set covers MRCOOL DIY 9k and 18k units. Always confirm against your unit's installation manual.

Are MRCOOL 4th Gen and 5th Gen line sets interchangeable?

No. MRCOOL 4th Gen DIY systems use R-410A and 5th Gen DIY systems use R-454B, and the two are not compatible. You must use a pre-charged line set made for your system's refrigerant and generation.

Do I need a vacuum pump for a MRCOOL DIY line set?

No. MRCOOL's Quick Connect (No-Vac) line sets are pre-flared and pre-charged, so you don't need a vacuum pump or EPA certification to connect them. You torque the fittings and open the service valves per the manual.

How long can a MRCOOL DIY line set be?

MRCOOL pre-charged DIY line sets come in 16, 25, 35, and 50 ft. The system supports a maximum total run of about 75 ft (for example a 50 ft line plus a 25 ft extension). Beyond the pre-charged maximum, refrigerant may need to be added by an HVAC pro. Check your model's maximum line length in the manual.

This page provides general guidance on MRCOOL DIY line set sizing based on MRCOOL's published product information. Exact line diameters, included and maximum line lengths, refrigerant type, and generation compatibility vary by model — always verify against your unit's official installation manual before purchasing or installing.
